59年前，中国战胜日本侵略者之际，一批中国著名的科学家和学者成立了一个民主政党——九三学社。它的宗旨是促进中国的民主与科学。17年前，九三学社已在中国的科学文化界拥有了几万名成员，其中有数以千计的著名学者和科学家。他们在1987年10月12日成立了自己的出版社。
出版社要起个好名字。中国宋代文学家苏轼有诗云：“笔砚耕学苑，戈矛战天骄。”“学苑”象征着文人聚会和向学之所。恰好，古希腊哲学家柏拉图讲学的地方Academe，也叫“学苑”（也称“学园”）。于是，出版社定名为“学苑出版社”。
学苑出版社成立以来，本着弘扬民主、促进科学的宗旨，以成为名副其实的科学成果荟萃之地、科学文化传播之桥为目标，迄今已出版了两千多种图书，共销售七千多万册，不但中国大陆所有的地方都能买到学苑版图书，而且港澳台地区和日本、韩国、东南亚、欧洲、北美每年都要购买几千册学苑版图书。一些海外出版公司购买了学苑版图书的海外版权。
根据与学苑出版社有密切联系的作者的学术背景情况、学术界的研究动态，针对中国出版业历史与现在的发展状况，我们着力于有中国特色的传统文化、医药学、地学、考古学领域的图书出版，并将继续出版科学技术、词典和地图等工具书、教育类图书以及文化艺术类图书。
学苑出版社规模不大，但能够提供一些读者需要的图书。学苑出版社历史很短，但前面的路还很长。我社相信，在这条路上，会得到无数朋友的关心与支持，帮助我们达到目标。
Fifty nine years ago, on the victory over Japanese invaders,
some famous Chinese scientists and scholars established
a democratic party, the Jiu San Society. The creation
of the Society was aimed at promoting democratic and scientific
developments in China. By 1987, several tens of thousands
of people who worked in the scientific and cultural sectors
had become members of the Society. A few thousand among
them were famous scholars and scientists. On 12 October
1987, the Society announced the founding of its own publishing
house.
A publishing house needs a good name.
In Chinese words, an “academe” symbolizes a place where
scholars and artists meet and gather together. It also
coincides with the Academe (also referred to as ‘Study
Field”) where the ancient Greek philosopher, Plato,
used to give his lectures. It was therefore decided
that the publishing house would use the Academy Press
as its official name.
Since its establishment, the Academy
Press has adhered to its principle of promoting democratic
and scientific development, making every effort to become,
both in name and in fact, a centre for scientific achievements
and a conduit through which scientific and cultural
knowledge is disseminated. Today, the Academy Press
has published over 2000 different kinds of books and
sold over 70,000 thousand copies. Furthermore, books
published by the Academy Press are sold all over Mainland
China. Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea,
SouthEast Asia, Europe and North America have also purchased
thousands of books from the Academy Press every year.
Some overseas publishing houses have even purchased
overseas rights from the Academy Press.
The Academy Press devotes its efforts in book publishing
towards traditional Chinese culture, medicine, geography
and archaeology, which have a unique Chinese character.
We will also continuously publish books in the fields
of science and technology, dictionaries, maps and other
reference books, and books for tertiary and adult education,
as well as books about culture and the arts.
The Academy Press is not a large publishing
house. However, we can provide the books, which our
readers need. Our history is relatively short, and we
still have a long way to go. We are fully confident
that we shall obtain the support of many of our friends,
who will help us on our journey towards the attainment
of our ultimate goal.
